Review - PowerBox Systems Digi-Switch

PowerBox Systems Digi-Switch-1 PowerBox Systems Digi-Switch-2

My search for an alternative power supply for my F3C helicopter in order to have extended 'play-time' has led me to the Powerbox System's - Digi Switch.
I was using Ni-cad RX batteries for my models. During the 3rd flight of the day, my model went into fail safe mode and landed by itself. After that, I thought that it’s time to change my power source for my models for an extended 'play-time'.

My requirements are:

  • Reliable regulator
  • Battery indicator
  • Able to use with the lipos packs that I have
  • Reliable switch

Initially, I considered using regulators connected directly to Lipos. Then they would also require a battery indicator. In addition, there is also the hassle of taking in and out the canopy (which were locked by screws) as there is no switch on these regulators. In order to resolve this, I will have to add a switch to the already complex configuration - and from my experience, a good switch is vital to nitro R/C helicopter.

The Digi-Switch is a switch that has a built-in regulator (input voltage from 2.5V to 8.4V, Output voltage at 5.3V), LED input battery indicator, and a dual heat sink all packed into a hard case.  The Digi-Switch works as a complete solution to what I need. The minimum voltage that the Digi-Switch would work is at 2.5V. This does not mean that we could run down the lipo battery to 2.5v and hope for the best, but a reassurance that the performance would be consistent throughout the flight with strong maneuvers even if the Lipos have weaken slightly after a few flights.

The Digi-switch has a feature that I would label “press-hold and press”, where you have to "press and hold" the Digi-switch once and then "press" the Digi-switch again - to switch on or off. This is my favorite feature as it would prevent accidental turn on/off. With the Digi-switch, I do not have to remove my heli canopy after every flight.

PowerBox Systems Digi-Switch-3
The limitation of the Digi-switch is that it only allows a single input source and does not allow redundancy power supply, like the powerbox systems. The input power source cannot be higher than 8.4V or up to 2 cells lipo.
Features:
  • Regulator: input 2.5V to 8.4V, Output: 5.3V
  • Built-in electronic switch with safety features
  • Indicator for input battery voltage
  • Front and back heat sink

Function:

  • Provide step-down voltage up to 8.4v to a consistent 5.3V to the receiver.

Benefit:

  • Consistent 5.3V voltage from the Digi-Switch for the electronics of the model gives consistent powerful and fast response during the flight. Even in extreme maneuvers, the voltage to the servos will remain at 5.3V to give the pilot full control without lagging in response.
  • The “press-Hold and press” safety feature is a useful design with safety of the modeler in mind. This prevents accidental knocks that can turns on or off the switch during transportation or in flight which may cause the model to crash
  • The Digi-switch is designed without any moving parts. Therefore, this minimizes any loose electrical connections that can be caused by vibrations from the model.
  • The battery indicator signals to the modeler when it is time to charge before the next flight.
  • Dual Heat Sink keeps the regulator cool during operations to improve efficiency.
